The sweeping scenery captures the hearts and lenses of both amateur and professional photographers, but it’s not only the shutterbugs who are finding inspiration here for their passion. Artists have long seen South Africa as a muse for perfect landscapes.
Jacobus Pierneef was one such artist. Widely considered to be the best of the old South African masters, he was particularly inspired by the highveld , and he produced an endless series of geometrically simplified landscapes that today are housed and admired all around the world.

Many of Pierneef’s pieces can be seen at The Rupert Museum in Stellenbosch. Currently, the Standard Bank Art Gallery in downtown Joburg is hosting a Pierneef exhibition, with many of his most iconic landscapes – some of them from The Rupert – on display.
The exhibition kicked off on 8th July and runs until 12th September.
