Slackpacking in Pleasant Places
A while back we blogged about Pleasant Places'' slackpacking hikes . One couple who recently enjoyed one of these trails wrote this letter of thanks, and we also have the latest info and prices on these popular trails from John Hall at Pleasant Places .

One hiker''s feedback

Hi John & Linda,

Jen and I would like to thank you both for a memorable and lovely walk. It will remain in our memories for a long time. We experienced a part of SA that we have missed. Not only did we see the country side, but experienced and met the warm folk that make this part of the country so unique.

It has a character all of its own and our prayers and hope is that it will never be swallowed up in the world.

The walk has a flavour all of its own. The walks through the farm lands and coming into touch with the people is so different and must be used to build on if there are any changes made.  I know I passed the comment that the afternoon of the last day was an endurance test, with real no change of the scenery.  First of all my apologies for engaging my mouth before my brain. A lot of work went into the preparation for the last day and for this we thank you.

The idea you had of this walk having a forest walk section included  is a good idea.

The catering superb and the time we spent fellowshipping around the dining room table will live with us for a long time. Thanks for allowing us into your home. This was very unique compared to all the other walks. The accommodation was superb, the best!! If it is not a trade secret the recipe for the pudding and ice cream on the last night would be appreciated.

The fact the walks could be easily altered was also nice, as it allowed for versatility in the event of unexpected changes in weather or if someone was unwell, hurt or just wanted to go back to their room.  We were very appreciative of the time and thought that went into the planning of the walks and especially to those who gave up their property for us to walk through and the time put into the preparation of the trails.

Please pass on our appreciation to all.

You asked for any comment for the walk and the only one from us is perhaps a guide from the local community, who has knowledge of the farms, animals, birds and fauna and flora. The walk is already a superb walk and this should be viewed only as a suggestion.

May the Lord bless you both and those that experience the walks and come into contact with His wonderful creation.

Please keep in touch and we would love to do the walk again in about 3 years time.

God Bless

Walking Trails at Pleasant Places in the Lidgetton Valley, KZN Midlands

There are 3 trails offered - Swissland Cheese & Fifehead Dairy, Blesberg Farm Indigenous Forest & surrounds and the Dargle Valley area.

The walks are about 12 to 15 km long. Hikers should bring both warm clothing, as well as lighter attire. The temperatures are largely determined by the mist, which can cause a drop of more than 10 degrees Centigrade in a few hours! Days are generally quite warm, but it gets colder at night and we have had to light fires in the lounge and dining room even on Christmas day! All bedrooms have underfloor heating or heaters so you will sleep warm.

Rates per person for the walks are:-

  • Three day trail, with a FOUR night stay – R3500
  • Three day trail, with a THREE night stay- R2750
  • Two day trail, with a THREE night stay – R2600
  • REGRET: NO DAY WALKS AVAILABLE

These rates include Dinner, Bed & Breakfast each night, daily lunches along the way, trail levies and transport to the start and finish of the trails and collection of any tired walkers. Please contact us on info@pleasantplaces.co.za or 033 234 4396 or 082 456 2717 if you require more info. Looking forward to meeting you, hosting you and sharing our valley with you.
