See the Southern cross this Easter at Shangri-La
No plans for the long weekend yet? Star-gazing at beautiful Shangri-La Country Hotel in the Waterberg will make this Easter unforgettable...

The stars are often considered to be some of the universe’s finest creations.  With so much interest in them (ranging from life in other solar systems to how it all began), one needs clear skies and in most cases, no city lights, to view these beauties properly.

What started off as a creative gesture from a duty manager, Shangri-La has taken its latest offering to its guests to a new level!  “We were looking for something different,” says Mrs Daniela Oesterle from Germany, “and we spoke to the duty manager Alfred about our request for something to do that was out of the ordinary.”  According to Daniela, the African skies are very different from the European view, and they had noticed it during their visit to Africa during September 2013.  Alfred returned with a brilliant idea – stargazing in the amphitheatre (which is an empty reservoir that has been converted to a sand-floored outdoor venue perfect for large functions and events).  A bonfire was built, snacks and drinks prepared, and two pool loungers were put side by side with a view of the exquisite night sky.  “It was magical,” says Daniela, “and it might seem silly, but this gesture was the perfect beginning to our holiday at Shangri-La.”

Following this roaring success of an evening, the story soon spread to the ears of owner Johan Jansen van Vuuren, who opened the doors to Shangri-La 23 years ago.  And today, Shangri-La is proud to showcase the free gift of its beautiful skies to all guests who would like something unique.  From the southern cross to Orion, depending on the time of the year, you will be amazed.  The setting of the amphitheatre is on the edge of Shangri-La’s main building and the only light is the low gloom of a sombre fire that crackles in the background, while the sounds of the vervet monkeys, meerkats and owls creates the mood of being in the heart of Africa.

Book your stay at Shangri-La and request this fantastic free activity.  Stargazing is subject to availability in the amphitheatre, but with so many beautiful locations at Shangri-La, guests are free to request it elsewhere.
