The painting, declared illegal, was then sneaked out of South Africa by anti-apartheid supporters to Britain, and returned in 1997 to South Africa to a ''very emotional and proud'' Harrison.
The message of the painting is “humankind’s inhumanity to humankind”, it was also about the spirit of Luthuli’s love, peace and compassion.
The original Black Christ is kept in the SA National Gallery, while a reproduction of the painting is on display at the Nelson Mandela Foundation offices.
The funeral service will be held in St Luke’s church in Salt River where his famous painting was unveiled in 1962.
