A Phantomastic Performance
Indeed, a sumptuous star-studded South African performance (including the Chandelier!) is this latest Phantom of the Opera production, and what a production it is – now playing at the Artscape Opera House in Cape Town until 15 January; and at Teatro at Montecasino in Johannesburg from 31 January to 25 March 2012.

I am one of the many Phantom fans out there, and in the past 25 years have been privileged to see it 3 times in London and once before in South Africa. With this latest Phantom offering, Pieter Toerien and the Really Useful Group’s production lives up to all expectations and more - with stunning sets, professional and polished performances from the entire cast and that hauntingly beautiful music we all know so well.

Even the Artscape stage is given the Paris Opera House treatment with a glamorous carved baroque gilt frieze which at once transports you back to Paris and to the bewitching mystery of the Phantom of the Opera with impressive stage sets, glittering costumes and captivating performances from the 130 cast, crew and orchestra members involved nightly. There are 230 exquisite costumes – with the most ostentatious being worn in the ‘Masquerade’ scene, some 22 scene changes and 281 candles for the underground lake scene. And of course the unforgettable music which makes it all so magical.
Now in its 25th anniversary year, more than 100 million people in 147 cities have seen it – don’t miss it!
