Mischa Gross (one time Production Assistant at Portfolio Collection, now a full-time mum) took her family to the Community Chest Carnival last night and wrote in to tell us all about it...

Last week it entered my mind that I hadn’t been to a Maynardville Carnival in a few years and it seemed the time of year for it. I did a quick Google and sure enough, to my delight I find an article with all the details for the fair this week.
It was all set – we were going, the kids were coming and even my folks were joining us which would be super!
We arrived at about 7pm and found parking very easily and in close proximity. We had decided to go on a week night to beat the crowds as going with a 3 year old and a 3 month old is busy enough!
We paid R15 to get in per adult, the kids were free and my folks paid R5 each as they are pensioners. They do handout maps of the carnival indicating all the facilities as well as the various stands that are based on foods from different countries e.g. Germany, Austria, China, Ireland and the ever popular Holland.
We jumped straight in and headed for some pancakes which didn’t disappoint. It’s a great feeling to know that there is a wide variety of foods and the proceeds go to various charities that the Community Chest support throughout the year. My hubby has some of the Nachos from the Mexican stand and I had a very mouth watering Schnitzel and Potato Salad from the Austrian stand.
The food is all very reasonably priced and for R35-R40 at most stalls you get a very nice meal depending on your desire for the night.
For book lovers, there are a few 2nd hand stores to browse and for kids of all ages there are many fun rides which will put a smile on their faces. There is also a main stage area where they offer entertainment and plenty of small beer gardens for those old enough to chill out and have a drink.
I was very impressed with the active police and usher presence which was enough to feel safe but not overbearing. I hate using public loo’s and even these were bearable with a kind carnival escort to even show us where it was.
All-in-all, a great family trip out that won’t break the bank and will keep each member of the family happy!
Details of the Carnival as taken from the Facebook page:
The Community Chest Carnival began as a Theatrical Garden Party in 1951 and has grown to become the biggest Public Relations event on our events calendar. 9000 volunteers donate their time, skills and expertise in order to create a carnival that brings the community together for four fun filled evenings.
