Ranger Diary

20 December 2010

The month of December continues to be a wet one, with the reserve having received 38mm of rain to date. As would have been noted with the weekly sightings updates, this has brought on a spurt of births amongst the antelope species. It is a perfectly timed scenario, were calving is timed with prevailing good conditions, enabling cows and ewes to provide their offspring with nutritious milk due to an abundance of foliage to feed on.

The lioness and her four cubs in the main section of the reserve had successfully brought down and killed a warthog under the watchful eye on onlookers near one of our main watering holes, only to have a cub, find and show interest in a Leopard (Mountain) tortoise. These tortoises are the largest member of this group in the Chelonian Family (Tortoises, Terrapins and Turtles) in South Africa, and the only specie that has the ability of being able to swim. The cub eventually lost interest and proceeded to rest its head of this slow moving creature.

The Breeding Herd of Elephant, due to the abundance of water throughout the reserve have been covering large distances on foraging forays. With the Field Guides arriving back at the lodges just after 7 pm, Pieter shares with us some of the amazing sunsets which he has photographed over the past week.

With the Christmas season on our door step, we look forward to sharing the amazing spectacles that unfold in our reserve, to though’s of you who will be visiting.
