Penguin Parents Needed
Looking for an ideal gift for a bird-lover, but don''t want to have to actually share your home with a feathery friend? We have the answer...

The coastline of South Africa is home to a large number of African penguins with the most well-known colonies at Boulders and SeaforthBeaches in Simon’s Town, and Betty’s Bay in the Overberg region.

Anyone who has had the privilege of observing these black and white seabirds –waddling like so many Charlie Chaplains on land, swimming sleekness in the water – will find them fascinating (if a little smelly in large numbers).

Sadly, many penguins suffer the effects of oil spills and require rescue and rehabilitation following one of these all too common events off our coastline.

SANCCOB is a sea-bird rehab centre, responsible for the health and well-being of the penguins in South Africa. They rescue, rehabilitate and release ill, injured, oiled and orphaned sea birds.

The care of the penguins is an ongoing job for SANCCOB and they rely heavily on donations.

They have set up a fantastic initiative with their Adopt-A-Penguin scheme - this is a source of much-needed funding for their work, and a unique gift idea for a loved one who is ecologically minded.

Need to know:

How does the adoption process work?

First off, download the Adopt a Penguin info sheet and application form from SANCCOB’s website. Read carefully, complete the form and submit to SANCCOB (with proof of payment if you are making a direct deposit. Click here for the Penguin Adoption form

Can I name my penguin?

Yes you can! - on the application form

How much does it cost?

Currently R500 per penguin (a once-off fee).

What happens next?

Between10 and15 working days following receipt of proof of payment an adoption pack will be mailed to you. This will include:

  • A letter of adoption which includes a brief description of why your penguin received treatment at SANCCOB
  • A photograph of your penguin
  • A certificate of adoption
  • Back-copies of our newsletter

Please note – you can’t keep your penguin! – and even if you visit SANCCOB headquarters you are almost certain not to be able to see your own penguin.

It will be released back into the wild as soon as possible so that they can get on with enjoying life in South Africa!
