The festival aims to provide emerging and established South African dance companies and choreographers with an opportunity to present their work.

Says Moses, “As an ex-dancer this was initially a passion project, but now in its ninth year the Baxter Dance Festival has become a legacy project which plays an enormous role in dance development in the Western Cape.”

Since its inception, over 300 local choreographers have presented their work featuring over 45 productions. This comprises of 1000 dancers from more than 150 studios, dance schools, projects and professional companies from all over the Western Cape - each presenting a wide variety of dance genres including contemporary, classic, African, modern, Spanish, cerebral and exotic.

“The Baxter Dance Festival’s objective is to seamlessly marry all forms of dance from the cerebral to the exotic - showcasing the diverse dance styles and genres in the Western Cape and fostering close relationships with our international counterparts in countries as far flung as Sweden and Tonga,” says Moses.

The festival will feature over 50 productions and consists of a Main, Off Main and Fringe programme. The Main programme features works of various lengths by established professional dance companies and choreographers, such as dance aficionados Alfred Hinkel and Byron, Klassen (O’Kiep) and Ananda Fuchs who will present an extract from ‘I hit the Ground Running’ - a collaboration with Scenkonst Sörmland (Sweden).

Continues Moses, “In its ninth year, the festival has a solid reputation for offering only the best choreography. Previous commissioned choreographers include Ebrahim Medell (2005), Marlin Zoutman (2006), Carolyn Holden from La Rosa Spanish Dance Theatre (2010), Grant van Ster and Ananda Fuchs in (2012). All these choreographers have continued to make their mark in the world of dance.”

Widely regarded as Cape Town’s premier dance platform, the festival has grown exponentially over the years. The 2013 line-up promises to be jam-packed with exciting and diverse dance performances - definitely a must-see on Cape Town’s events calendar.
