Our Wilderness Travel Guide
Wilderness is a beautifully unspoilt section of the Garden Route - as implied by its name it is a place of wild beauty with a secluded sandy beach, forested hills, lagoons and a small, friendly town.

You can choose to enjoy the serenity of the place at a relaxed pace, or take advantage of the many activities available, especially appealing to those who enjoy their vacation seasoned with a touch of thrill and adventure.

Wilderness Highlights

Action and adventure: Eden Adventures offers kloofing, abseiling and canoeing in and around Wilderness. You can also go mountain biking, surfing and paragliding in the area.

Arts and antiques: Visit the Beatrix Bosch Art Studio (she is the only leather artist in South Africa). Peter Pharoah Art is a great place to find and buy new artworks.

Beaches: Wilderness beach has soft white sand and is seldom crowded off season. Great surf on good days. Head to Dolphin Point to see whales and dolphins cavort in the waves in season. Shore and rock based fishing is popular.

Eat out: Serendipity recommends you eat at their own 5 star Guest House, or try Pomodoroor The Girls for local dining out worth experiencing.

Markets and events: The Wild Oats Organic Market (Saturday mornings) and the Friday Evenings Village Market both offer great shopping and eating opportunities.  Make a trip out to nearby George for the annual George Cheese Festival each winter.

Nature lovers: The Africa Mountain Forests Habitat is unique to the Wilderness Area. Visit the Wilderness-Sedgefield Waterbird Conservancy and national park trails. Try out the Woodville Big Tree Circular Walk, or a Power Van  trip into  the Outeniqua Mountains - both great for families.

Our Portfolio of Wilderness Accommodation

Wilderness is a great place to enjoy a relaxed or adventurous ''outward bound'' holiday on the Garden Route. It''s close enough to bigger centres to head out for a day, but offers enough in the vicinity to keep you busy. Or of course you can simply enjoy keeping it local - chilling on the beach, shopping at the markets and exploring the immediate surrounds.

Summer is a good time to enjoy all the region has to offer but look out for off peak specials and you can enjoy some of the lovely autumn, spring and even winter days that this area specialises in.

Portfolio Collection has a fine selection of Wilderness accommodation - beach front or lagoon front guest houses and lodges, peaceful retreats, charming B&Bs and luxury country homes - you''re sure to find the ideal place for your next Garden Route holiday.

Thanks goes to Serendipity Country House for the following information on things to see and do in Wilderness.
