One cyclist, One Country, 9000km in 70 days.
On the 13th of February 2010, Ruan Smit will embark on a South African first, A cycle tour around our country. This journey will encompass almost 9000km on a bicycle in 70 days

Ruan will cycle an average of 150kms per day in order to finish this exploration. On his tour he will collect stories from all the regions and unite a culturally diverse country through its stories. The journey is not a race but rather a social experience. By taking it slow, the journey will take time to speak with people, enjoy food with them and sleep in their environment.

Every step will be published on social media (Facebook, twitter) and on a daily blog.

This journey aspires to create some excitement surrounding 2010 and giving international and local tourists the opportunity to explore South Africa from a different perspective and also show some lesser know tourist destinations.

This Journey aims to inspire a nation through itself by making this a OUR journey, a journey to which everyone can join into in various ways.

Hi Ruan First of all good luck with your trip. Secondly, check out www.jolandie.co.za, Jolandie completed a solo circumnavigation of SA on 10 Jan 2010 after 100 days on the road and 5 951kms with absolutely no back-up, companionship or assistance. Funnily enough (as her media manager) our Press release read almost as this heading does, One Girl, A Bicycle and One Big Dream. Would be interesting to know what inspired you.... Regards Elise

Hi Elise, Thanks for bringing this to my attention and I sincerely apologise. I do however want to stress the fact that wanting to be the first person to cycle around the country has never been the intention of this journey. My inspiration lies solely with the stories and landscapes of a nation. I want to discover South Africa as it is seen by us, the people. The tour aims to create unity through diversity. I would however love to meet with Jolandie and share in her experience. Maybe even do an article on her experiences. We obviously have one thing in common. The crazy urge to be adventurous and push ourselves to the limit. My motivation is stories. And I hope I can share in Jolandie''s story. You can visit www.exploresa.wordpress.com for any questions. Kind Regards.
