Earlier this year Susanne Schubert won a weekend at The Munro Boutique Hotel in our Insider Tips competition - and she blogged her experience for us.
I was the lucky winner of a getaway in a recent Portfolio competition. My prize was a two day stay for two including breakfast at the The Munro Boutique Hotel in Houghton, Johannesburg. It was a perfect opportunity to explore Johannesburg as a tourist destination from the comfort of our exceptionally stylish accommodation. When approaching The Munro, it is easy to drive past, as nothing on the outside tells you what lies behind 63 St Patrick Road!

Whoever seeks total privacy in an intimate, yet splendid setting, has found what he was looking for. The Munro has only five rooms and, besides just spending a weekend or holiday, is ideal for any kind of reception, be it a wedding or a special celebration.

My husband and I were warmly greeted by the Manager Stefan Coetzee. Upon entering this stylish mansion, our eyes were immediately drawn to the terrace and the panoramic view on Johannesburg with Sandton in the distance. And what a view this is! I had no clue how green the city is. On top, we were there end of October, and all the suburbs were dotted with the lovely purple of the Jacaranda trees in full bloom. In the centre of the terrace is a stunning pool, lit at night, overlooking the bustling city while we were surrounded by the occasional birdsong. Stefan showed us to our luxurious room with its spacious bathroom and closed in balcony, ideal for when a thunderstorm hits the city.

The whole villa displays opulent décor throughout, a Victorian style winter garden with exotic birds, a bar, a cozy lounge with a fireplace and an intimate dining room adorned with a hand painted ceiling. Outside, one part of the large terrace is covered by a white baldachin where we had a romantic dinner on our first evening. Breakfast is served inside or outside, weather depending, with lots of fresh fruit, a cold meat and cheese selection as well as cooked breakfast. The staff is very friendly and helpful and everybody asked how our day was.

We were a little tempted to laze around the pool on the comfy deck-chairs and simply gaze at Jozi stretching out in front us, but then decided against it. There is just too much to see and to discover! On our first day, we opted for the City Sightseeing Bus with its twelve stops across Johannesburg. We got a glimpse of this large, dynamic and forever changing city.
