''Letters from the Sky'' a must-see
Writer and film maker Terry Westby-Nunn saw this screening last night and emailed us recommending we post it to the Travel Blog as she feels "...more people need to see it - it''s a fantastic initiative curated by Kai Lossgott - a well-known South African artist."

Launching on the 28th November and running until early 2012, experimental film festival, ‘LETTERS FROM THE SKY’, will take to our screens as part of the COPART Cultural Action. The festival, curated by Cape Town based Kai Lossgott, will showcase a series of film messages from artists and filmmakers from all over the world. The artists were briefed to present personal responses to the effects of climate change on their communities, families and lives.

The curator’s brief asked artists to simply respond to one question:

‘How does climate change affect your habitat?’

“Many of us feel powerless about the destruction of the planet and grim predictions for the future. But it is not all bad news,” says Lossgott. ”Climate change is the one social movement that touches all of us, regardless of ethnicity, gender, class, age or creed. Climate change is the youth movement of the 21st century. LETTERS FROM THE SKY asks artists to respond with their hopes, fears, dreams and nightmares to make a combined political statement.”

In film letters, which take the form of documentary, animation, experimental film, artist''s film, video art, screen dance or video poetry, the participating artists were expected to engage with evidence of climate change with personal but researched and well informed responses. Using film as a medium, the complex issues at hand needed to be transformed into dynamic but simple audio-visual experiences with both popular and critical merit.
