Of this important festival on the Greek Orthodox Calendar, Marika says:
At this time of the year, there is much preparation going on for the Easter celebrations and church services daily, culminating in a midnight service on Saturday night, with all the old traditions still in place. The 40 day fast (no meat or dairy products allowed) is broken traditionally after the midnight mass with feasts of great foods, and the cracking of red eggs and the eating of tsourekia, lovely sweet bread made at this time of the year.
Greek Community in South Africa
According to Wikipedia there are approximately 13 000 people of Greek descent living in South Africa.
Legend has it that the first Greek to set foot on South African soil was a convict known simply as "Stephanos", who later became the prophet and chief of the Kora tribe. Today thousands of Greeks remain in South Africa and there are active, thriving Greek communities in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth.
