Knynsa Oyster Festival
Knysna’s big event of the year, the Knysna Oyster Festival, starts on Friday – and this week the town will be buzzing as visitors arrive, stocks of juicy, delicious (enough!) succulent (enough!!) oysters are brought in, crates of superb wine are off-loaded, musicians tune up their instruments, and the town gets set to party.
It’s always a typically Garden Route winter experience – a mix of wet, mist and mud (if you’re MTB-ing or roadbiking) choppy waves and a chilly wind if you’re sailing or paddling, and THEN…..the warm, cozy buzz of crowded restaurants and log fires…and those oysters…..
NOW – a hot tip: Do yourselves a favour: DO visit the Knysna Mall, where a display of the latest and best of gorgeous automotive sculpture will be on display. That’s all we’re saying for now. We’ll give you more info later in the week…
The Knysna Oyster Festival takes place from July 1-10, 2011.
A true story (really!):
Part of the folklore in the Karoo is a story about a (very blue-blooded) British family who visited SA in the 50s – and brought their Rolls Royce Silver Cloud with them on the mailship. Near Matjiesfontein the venerable RR ceased forward motion and came to an ignominious halt. A passing farmer saw the family’s plight, and towed the family in the car to the Lord Milner hotel.
The family patriarch telegraphed the RR works in Crewe, and prompt assistance was promised.
Meanwhile, the hotel arranged sight-seeing trips for the toffs.
One morning two days later the waiter brought the RR’s keys to their diningroom table. “Your car’s ready, sir”, he murmured.
At reception the lady ‘wasn’t aware’ of any account that had to be settled, and, puzzled, the family set off.
Some weeks later back in the UK, he called Crewe wanting to know how much he owed them for ‘repairing my broken-down car’.
A toffee-nosed voice on the other end ‘made enquiries’, and then came back to the telephone.
‘We are not aware of any such incident, sir’, he said. Then, in a somewhat offended tone, he added: ‘Rolls-Royces do NOT break down, sir’.
