Things to do in Knysna

Even if your visit to Knysna doesn''t co-incide with one of these festivals, there''s plenty more to do...

  • Boating: Charter a houseboat for a weekend, or take a cruise at Sunset on the waters of the Knysna Lagoon.
  • Sporting events: The Knysna Forest Marathon and the Knysna Cycle Tour (as well as several mountain biking events) happen in Knysna each year.
  • Elephants: You could go elephant-spotting in the hope to see one of (or the only?) remaining Knysna elephant/s. Or head to the Knysna Elephant Park and hand-feed a baby elephant. The park is situated off the N2, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay.
  • Explore: Ask locals for directions to Coney Glen, a gorgeous, sheltered cove near the Knysna Heads with a shady, grassed picnic site. Braai (BBQ) snorkel in the rock pools and play on the sandy beach. Or go tree-spotting - in the Knysna Forest you’ll note ‘Big Tree’ signs which take you on a wooded walkway.
  • Birding & Fishing: With all the water about both fishing enthusiasts and twitchers will be kept happy for hours out and about in Knysna. The Woodbourne Marsh and wetlands around the lagoon are especially bird-rich. Salt and fresh water fishing a-plenty to be had. You’ll need to buy a fishing permit at the Knysna Post Office.
  • Beer lovers:  Local brewery Mitchell’s holds beer tastings in Knysna Monday to Saturday. Call 044-382-4685 to book.
