Philippine-born pianist Mariel Ilusorio received her piano training in Manila, the US (The Juilliard School and Oberlin Conservatory) and Germany (Hannover). She has performed in the Philippines, Indonesia, the U.S., several countries in Europe, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Chile. She currently teaches in Grahamstown and Fort Hare University, and continues to perform solo and chamber music concerts.
Chilean violinist/conductor Juan Munoz received his musical education in Santiago, Chile, and has lived in South Africa for more than 25 years. He led the Cape Town Baroque Ensemble and was 2nd Violin leader of the CAPAB Orchestra before leading the Odeon String Quartet in the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein. He has conducted the East Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as the SA National Youth Concert Orchestra. He is currently Senior Lecturer at the Rhodes University Music Department.
This "Chilipino" duo has performed together for several music societies in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Germany, Chile, and the Philippines. Juan and Mariel have their own Concert Series in Grahamstown called Juan, Mariel and Friends, which is supported by the Rupert Musiekstigting, as well as a Concert Series in Bedford, together with the Bedford Music Appreciation Society. Their goal is to keep classical music alive in the Eastern Cape through their performances, their teaching, and outreach projects.
