Voortrekker Monument
The Voortrekker Monument, inaugurated on 16 December 1949, commemorates the Voortrekkers, and has developed into a tourist destination and heritage institution. The Monument is the main attraction on site, symbolising Afrikaner nationalism of the 20th century. Although focusing on the Great Trek (1835-1852), many new yet related aspects have been added in recent years.

The historic marble frieze, famous tapestries and the cenotaph remain major attractions. A new Heritage Centre was inaugurated in 2008, containing a splendid exhibition on “Afrikaners in the 20th century: Pioneers, Beacons and Bridges; post card flashes from history”. It is probably the only comprehensive, objective exhibition about the Afrikaners in the world.
