Fouriesburg is Dorp van die Jaar 2013
The annual Dorp van die Jaar (Small Town of the Year)has been announced - scroll down to find out where you can stay near the pretty Eastern Free State town of Fouriesburg.

The winner of the Kwêla Kyknet Town of the Year 2013 Competition was announced on Kyknet on the 7th August and Fouriesburg in the Eastern Free State took the crown with an incredible107 761 votes - pretty impressive when one considers the competition came from many charming towns throughout South Africa and Namibia.

South African ''dorps'' have become increasingly popular destinations over the past 10 years for those wanting to see a different side to the country. Each town has its own special ambiance that sets it apart. Far from boring (as some city lovers might fear a dorp getaway might be) discovering the stores, markets, restaurants and pubs of each small town, meeting the locals, and exploring the surrounding farmlands and countryside, all adds up to a wonderfully unique escape from city and suburban life.

Fouriesburg''s prize includes marketing to the value of R1 million, which will benefit not only Fouriesburg but also the Free State accommodation and attractions nearby.

It seems the Eastern Free State is growing in popularity as Clarens, also in this region, was last year''s winning town.

The celebrations will be held in the Fouriesburg on 24 August 2013 and there is bound to be loads of good food and great fun to be had.

Eastern Free State getaway

Wouldn''t it be fun to stay on a working farm between in this year and last year''s winning dorps?

Oranje Guest Farm is a tranquil working farm set amongst the beautiful mountains of the eastern Free State, near the border of Lesotho and close to Clarens and Fouriesburg. The renovated sandstone barn and church are ideal for Free State weddings and functions for up to 220 guests. Enjoy a sundowner or special treat from the Stoep Café with views of the surrounding panoramic mountains.
