| The view from our car window on arrival was not too welcoming! |
While huddling under the flimsy shelter of one of the old changing room buildings on the beach front, those of us who were not actively participating watched as the surfers lined up along the sand for photographers at around 12h30, before heading into the waves.

While conditions were not ideal for the spectators (last year we were tanning and swimming!) they were perfect for the Guiness World Record attempt - to get as many surfers as possible all surfing one wave simultaneously.

| And they''re off... |
South Africa held the previous record of 110 surfers (other countries compete at the same time each year) but this year the weather had obviously discouraged some of the would be participants and there were far less surfers in the water.

Having said that we managed to get 93 surfers up and riding on one of the several attempts made yesterday - not enough to top our own record but not a bad effort under the circumstances.

So for now SA still holds the Earthwave Record thanks to our 2009 Earthwave event - let''s hope for sunnier skies and more participants next year so that we can beat our own record!
Our photographer (my son) didn''t manage to get a shot of the top attempt but there are some great images here...
