Durban a finalist in international eco city challenge
The We Love Cities Challenge is an initiative by the World Wildlife Fund celebrating the most sustainable cities in the world. Durban is one of the chosen cities...

We Love Cities 2014

There are 33 cities out of 14 countries competing in the We Love Cities challenge with their sustainability efforts.

Each city has been chosen by excelling in any of the following four categories:

  • smarter transport
  • cleaner energy
  • efficient buildings
  • less waste
  •

Why Durban?

Durban has been selected based on their efforts to reduce the waste created by everyday living.

The project in Durban which sees landfill waste converted into 7.5MWh of power using hydroelectric turbines has showcased Durban’s tremendous sustainability efforts. Other programmes that have contributed to Durban’s energy saving efforts include the wonder bag cooker, solar mapping, forecasting and subsidies that drive the industry.

Durban, who has hosted the COP17, is well known internationally for development and sustainability of the environment. The Energy Department at Ethekweni Municipality runs numerous initiatives towards sustainable living such as the Priority Zone, which sees the management of various self sustaining food gardens including the roof top garden in Durban’s CBD and grassroots agricultural enterprises in Umbumbulu.

During this campaign the city hopes to make the public more aware of the initiatives running, and to promote and encourage citizens to adjust their habits to being green friendly. The city also requires much interaction between residents and the World Wildlife Fund in order to win this challenge.

Help Durban win!

Three ways to help...
