De Hoek Getaway winner report back on her weekend away
Michele Caine was the lucky winner of a recent getaway at De Hoek Country Hotel in Magaliesburg, in our Insider Tips newsletter. She and her hubby loved their stay and she tells us about it today.

1.     What were your first impressions of De Hoek Country Hotel on arrival?

Peaceful. I loved the desent through tunnelling trees and suddenly being presented with the quaint wooden bridge!  It was so unexpected! Very efficient staff.  All the hotel rooms were well appointed and catered for our needs.   The gardens are absolutely exquisite.

2.   De Hoek has a ''prestige'' rating with Portfolio - our highest rating - above luxury. Did you find the accommodation merited this?

Yes. The service was impeccable and staff were informative and willing to assist at all times. The hotel ambience is relaxed, comfortable and totally stress free. The room in  our apartment was well stocked with what we needed.  The bathrooms are lovely with beautiful body products.

3. The food at De Hoek is a highlight for most guests - what kind of meals were on the menu?

We enjoyed meals of the highest standard.  With a variety of dishes to choose from.  Breakfast offered salmon and coldmeat canapés, cereal, fresh fruit, fruit juices, pastries and jams.  We had an option of traditional farm eggs, bacon, mushrooms, french toast, bagels topped with spinach and hollandaise sauce and an additional choice of an omelette with mushrooms or a Scottish breakfast.  All dishes were tasty and beautifully presented.

Dinner included a variety of starters with prawns and salads and main dishes catered for the vegetarian, baked cob and fillet, basted and cooked to perfection.  There was a basket of homemade farm bread.  There was a choice of international and local red and white wines from the wine selection on display to choose from.  This was a real treat. The dessert was outstanding, a Crème Brulee in three flavours served in three small separate dishes.

4. What was your favourite part / aspect of the weekend.

Walking in the gardens with the ferrets, birds, monkeys and geese and knowing that dinner was going to be served shortly!  Sitting in the reception room reading my book.  Being waited on “hand and foot”!  Enjoying the rural atmosphere.

5. What was your husband''s favourite?

He enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere of the hotel and lying next to the pool.  He was also very impressed with the food.
