Contemporary Art Festival Brings Colour to Cape Winter
CAPE 09 is an interactive and unique contemporary art festival set to take over parts of Cape Town for almost two months this winter, from 02 May – 21 June.

The launch of the event takes place next Saturday on Long Street, with a one hour processional, “A Walk in the Night”, largely comprising shadow play by 100 local participants who will be “casting shadows onto horizontal and vertical planes along the itinerary of the procession, from hand-held white screens, to buildings, the sidewalk and the ground, participants and audience members.”

This unusual start sets the scene for a programme filled with displays, interventions and performances in the streets and squares of the city, at stations and in libraries, on buses and in public gardens.

One example is a temporary botanical garden that will be set up in the township of Khayelitsha. Another, a fun event called Musical Statues where members of the public are encouraged to dress up a statue of Cecil John Rhodes, located in the Company Gardens, and have their photo taken with him.

For a full programme which includes dance, drama, mime, videography, sculpture and much more, check out the CAPE 09 website.
