Caution. Extremely Fresh Beer.
Wine is big in the Cape, we all know that. But did you know that you can get very decent, very tasty beer brewed right here in Cape Town?

This past Saturday saw a group of snap happy photographers (myself included) from the Cape Town Flickr Meetup Group converging on Paarden Eiland. I know, I know not the prettiest place to spend a gorgeous weekend day – but we were there for a Very Good Reason.

Beer.*

Freshly brewed, Cape Town beer, nogal. **

Boston Breweries is a local micro-brewery run by owner and chief brewer Chris Barnard *** – a man who is even more passionate about the liquid gold than I am – and that’s saying something. (Although admittedly he cares a lot more about how it’s made than I)

On arrival we were plied with glasses of his special brew to get us ‘in the mood’. Given a choice between ale and lager I started with the lager – and very yummy it was indeed.

Fortified, we followed Chris on a tour of the teeny, shiny brewery where he explained proudly, lovingly and in plain English how the beer is made. He also told us of how his dream developed following his return to Cape Town after time spent in Germany to find he just wasn’t satisfied with the locally made stuff anymore. Having started off in a garage, providing local shebeens with beer in plastic bottles, Chris’s operation is now legal - and far slicker - and he supplies a steadily growing number of outlets around the Western Cape, with recent forays being made into Gauteng. However, lables are still put on one at a time, by hand.

While the talk / tour was certainly interesting, come question time Chris quickly realised that he was dealing with a group of photographers who were really there to take pictures and drink beer. He wisely let us to get on with it, staying around to participate in avid one-on-one conversations about his product. And to tap more beer.

Most of us left with six-packs of Boston Breweries’ produce tucked under our arms, ready to serve at the next braai.  And when the inevitable questions come up around the origins of the tasty lager and ale we’ll be ready to use the tagline “Actually, it’s made in Cape Town”.

*For those readers from abroad, the term ‘beer’ is used in this article in the South African way – id est interchangeable with lager.

**SAfricanism for none-the-less.

***No, not that one. Of course.

So can we buy these at our local bottlestore? (Not that we know where there''s a local bottlestore, you understand, but just so we can tell those of our friends who are into this kind of thing where to go!)
