Cape Agulhas Top 10
So you want to visit the Southernmost tip of Africa, but what exactly is there to do once you''re at L''Agulhas besides look at the sea? Quite a bit, it turns out - especially if you''re a nature lover.

  1. Stand with a foot in 2 oceans at the same time! Drive right to the viewpoint (clearly signposted from the road) and have the all-important photo taken at the Southernmost Tip of Africa with the Indian Ocean on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other.
  2. Visit the iconic red and white striped lighthouse. Built in 1948 it is still in working condition. Climb the 71 steps for special 2-ocean views and visit the museum on site.
  3. Drive along the coastline, known as the Graveyard of the Ships. The most-recently wrecked ship, the Meishu Maru 38, ran aground here in 1982.
  4. Take a 3 hour hike along the Rasperpunt Hiking Trail, a circular route starting at the Meishu Maru wreck.
  5. Travel past Piet se Punt to Suiderstrand where you can view archeological Khoi middens and bird traps.
  6. Visit the Agulhas National Park, rich with indigenous flora and fauna.
  7.  Birding enthusiasts, look out for the African Black Oystercatchers and 21 000 other migrant and residential wetland birds in the Park.
  8. View local art in the galleries on Main Road, L’Agulhas
  9. Paragliders can bring their gear and enjoy the view from the air – L’Agulhas is a popular spot for this sport.
  10. Pop in at the L’Agulhas Tourism Info at the lighthouse for advice and information.

Even without this very handy list, I had a wonderful time in Agulhas this weekend. We stayed with Agulhas Country Lodge (Retreats Collection) who has a wonderful location and gorgeous views (not to mention the Jacuzzi in the bedroom!). The food deserves a special mention (amaaazing!!) There is truly something very special about being at the absolute tip of Africa. I highly recommend it!

We have a family-sea cottage in Struisbay. My brother''s ashes, Adriaan Oosthuysen ,were thrown into the sea at Pietie se Huis. I will always treasure this place !
