Birding Thursday - Rare Bird near Fish Hoek Attracts Twitchers
The wetlands at Clovelly near Fish Hoek have been a-twitter with news of sightings of a tiny bird, possibly never before seen south of the equator.

The Little Crake has certainly not been spotted in South Africa before and the news that one was visiting these accessible wetlands caused flocks of visitors to the normally sleepy corner of False Bay, better known for its golf course.

Bird watchers from as far as Gauteng flew down to photograph and observe the small yellow-billed bird which occurs usually in eastern Europe and Asia and migrates in winter to  northern Africa, not usually further south than Ethiopia.

When birds are found in the ''wrong'' place it is usually caused by their internal ''GPS'' system getting confused and can lead to interesting sightings for twitchers.

Birding experts who have gathered along with regular bird watchers are unsure how long the Little Crake will hang around, or whether she will make it all the way home safely.

Let''s hope so - she has a long flight ahead of her.
