Best Birds Spotted in Newlands!
A few weeks ago we reported on the pair of African Goshawks which have nested in the tall trees in Portfolio''s garden in Newlands and have now had youngsters. We have been having Goshawk Flight Training School and Joy, our blog editor, had a close encounter when the young Goshawk flew into her office.

More exciting news is that close by, Riversong Guest House, set on the banks of the Liesbeeck River in Esme Road has an African Harrier Hawk nestling in their large fig tree tree (which is over 300 years old) at the bottom of their garden on the river’s edge.

Inri McManus, owner of Riversong says: "These raptors are fairly recent arrivals on the Cape Peninsula. Thirty years ago they were virtually unknown here and they think the first nest was found around 2000. They are the only raptor in our skies that have a black tail with a single broad stripe in it. Members of the Black Sparrow Hawk Project l spotted it and alerted me and took the pictures below".
