South Africa''s version of Burning Man, AfrikaBurn is "is the spectacular result of the creative expression of participants who gather once a year in the Tankwa Karoo to create a temporary city of art, theme camps, costume, music and performance" - according to http://www.afrikaburn.com/.
This year the event takes place from 25 - 30 April and the theme for 2012 is MIRAGE. Party-goers will be interpreting this theme in many magical and spectacular ways creating a theme camp, building an artpiece or ''mutant'' vehicle for the sheer fun of participating in the creation of ''the wild tapestry of Tankwa Town''.
A key aspect of AfrikaBurn is that money is not used in the temporary town, instead revellers all bring something to contribute to the greater good of the community.
A highlight is the night of The Burn when specifically made burning art is set alight to spectacular effect.
