On a rainy weekend in May, my best friend Kelly and I ventured out to Grande Provence Heritage Wine Estate in Franschhoek.
The drive from Cape Town was beautiful, but it was the estate’s autumn-hued vineyards set against the dramatic mountain backdrop that really took our breath away (My smartphone photographs don’t do it justice).
From the moment we arrived, it was clear that Grande Provence is a step ahead when it comes to service.
The Owner’s Cottage Manager, Vera Alberts, and butler, Wellington Munyeza, greeted us warmly, helped us with our luggage, and ushered us to the most beautifully appointed room, complete with a fire place – we instantly felt like royalty!
We spent the afternoon exploring the estate, which included a fascinating guided tour of the wine cellars, gallery and grounds, and of course, a sampling of award-winning wines in the trendy tasting room.
The fire was already lit and crackling away when we returned to our room, where we were able to read, relax, and really enjoy the feeling of being away from one’s everyday routine.

We had dinner in the town, but will most definitely have to return to indulge in the full fine dining experience at The Restaurant.
A delicious breakfast overlooking the garden and pool area at the Owner’s Cottage rounded off our luxurious stay at Grande Provence.
With all of the wonderful hospitality shown to us, it is no surprise that Wellington has been acknowledged as Grande Provence’s Employer of the Month this July.
Thank you to the staff at Grande Provence and Heather Coull at Moja Media for a memorable stay – we hope to visit again soon for another wonderful escape to the winelands.
