Rosendal Retreat

When I thought of the Eastern Free State, the first thought that came to mind wasClarens. But as I drove through the majestic Golden Gate National Park, admired the Lesotho mountains in the blue distance, the patchwork of farmlands, ochre mountains, and waving windmills, I realized there is far more to this unique part of the country.

At the heart of this remote scenery lies the charming little town of Rosendal. Surrounded by beautiful countryside and the Witteberge mountains, it is the perfect place to get away from the madding crowds, the noisome traffic and that relentless daily grind. As you drive in on the town’s one tar road, the rest being good dirt roads, your eye is drawn to the sandstone spire of the NG church peeking out above the trees.

You can see the influence of local artists not only in the art galleries dotted around the town, but also in the gardens of the beautiful sandstone houses. Can’t find that old war helmet to complete your collection, or plough for your garden? Then pop in at Turksvy Trading where you’ll find antiques, bric-a-brac, and all sorts of interesting collectables crammed into every conceivable space. Next door is Suzani’s, where you’ll find unique cloths handmade in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.

Driving past a large corrugated iron building on a corner, I couldn’t miss ‘Die Teater’ painted in large letters, and next door ‘Die Kroeg’. Actor Chris van Niekerk, of 7de Laan fame, opened the theatre a few years ago, and I will be sure to co-incide my next visit here with a performance, after I’ve enjoyed a cuppa and bought some more antiques at Die Ou Handelshuis en Koffiestoep next door.

The Rosendal Country Retreat is very aptly named. Enjoy a sundowner on the verandah of the rather chic bar, overlooking the mountains, before a wholesome dinner. The rooms are set amongst beautiful gardens, and are wonderfully spacious, with a welcome fireplace and decadent Victorian slipper bath. Breakfast was a leisurely affair on the verandah, watching the cows nose the hay bales, and geese bathing in puddles.
