A Few Favourite South African Travel Destinations
Guest blogger Lynette tells us what she thinks makes South Africa an ideal holiday destination - especially the coastal destinations of the Western and Eastern Cape.

South Africa is truly the perfect holiday destination for the whole family. As you arrive, you will immediately notice how friendly the people of South Africa are. What a way to begin a perfect vacation in a country that has everything to offer! So pack your briefcases and get ready for the experience of a lifetime!

During your stay in Cape Town, if you are into nightlife, do what I do and spend an evening in Long Street. Everything you need is right here for a great evening’s entertainment. Great restaurants and pubs line this street – Bob’s in particular, is a great favourite with the locals.

Clifton and Camps Bay in Cape Town are the places to be if you want to rub shoulders with millionaires. Clifton is also a popular venue for beach weddings – I attended such a wedding a few years ago, and it was beautiful. The beach itself is so stunning, that no decorations at all are needed.

Further along the coast is Hout Bay, where you can enjoy a day at the famous World of Birds, or perhaps enjoy a meal at one of the many fabulous restaurants – any seafood you order here is almost guaranteed to be fresh from the ocean!

A little further along you get Fish Hoek and then Simonstown, where the SA Navy has its base. Also, taking a walk along the main road of this little village is an experience in itself, with the really quaint little shops, tea rooms, and restaurants.

A short distance from here is where you’ll find Gordon’s Bay – a little coastal village with great beaches, restaurants, and other activities to keep you busy. The beach is beautiful and quite safe for swimming as well – my daughter spent a day there with her little girl, and had a ball, as you can see from the photograph!

Also along this coastline of South Africa, you will come across the beautiful Tsitsikamma Forest that has much to offer the visitor. Apart from outdoor activities such as hiking, boat trips, fishing, and caves to explore, you can also enjoy the unique canopy tours that are available in the forest itself.

Speaking from experience, ( I did the tour a while ago), it’s a little daunting when you start out, but the spectacular scenery along the way allows you to forget that you are 30 meters above the forest floor!

Still higher up the coast is Jeffrey’s Bay, home of the perfect wave, and an absolute delight to surfers and sun worshippers alike. Not only is this area world famous for the surfing opportunities it offers, but also the variety of near-perfect shells that are washed up on the shore daily. Dolphin sightings are a daily occurrence and even the whales love Jefferys Bay – they come back every year to calve, between May and October! Although I really don’t like having sand all over my body and stuck inside my clothing, I tried my hand at sand boarding at Aston Bay, and surprisingly, I really enjoyed it! This and the shark aquarium at Marina Martinique are other great activities during a stay in Jeffrey’s Bay. The end of the year Christmas market is also worth a visit – it’s awesome!

Of course, everywhere in South Africa, you will find fabulous restaurants, superb accommodation to suit all budgets, and really great shopping opportunities.
