Portfolio Travel Blog: We had literally thousands of entries in the Journey of a Lifetime competition! How did you feel when you heard you were the winner?
Kitty Treki: I could not believe it! I had discovered only a week before that my hubby and I were pregnant with our first baby! Then I got the call to say we had won this prize! It was like Christmas, new year & Easter all rolled into one!!
PTB: Tell our readers why a train journey specifically was a big deal to you and your husband Adam.
KT: Adam and I shared our first kiss on train tracks back in 2010! I had dreamed of us doing a luxurious train trip to celebrate an anniversary and this Rovos Trip we booked fell on our 9 month wedding anniversary! The trip doubled up as a second honeymoon and a fantastically romantic baby moon ;)
PTB: What was your first impression of the train when you checked in?
KT: I felt like we had stepped onto a mobile museum...every detail of the cabins and the service smelled sweetly of yesterday-year!
PTB: How did you find the Rovos staff?
KT: The staff were amazing! Helpful! Friendly! Quick with a smile! Wonderful down to earth personalities all striving to grant every wish of the passengers
PTB: What was your favourite meal on the trip?
KT: Scallops!!! Out of this world! Rovos may have fueled a new expensive addiction!
PTB: What did Adam enjoy the most of the experience?
KT: My hubby works in Renewable energies and was hugely turned on by the fact that the Cape Town to Pretoria route passed several of his turbine and solar farms! (Go figure). He also obviously loved the single malt and fantastic wine selection too!
PTB: Describe some of the scenery you travelled through.
KT: We saw an amazing mass of water with kazillions of flamingos as we left Kimberly! This was a scenery highlight for sure!
PTB: What was your favourite moment of the whole experience?
KT: Settling into our deluxe cabin with a glass of bubbly!
PTB: Any special or funny stories to share?
KT: Black tie dinners in the evenings complete with lobster tails/Karoo lamb cooked to perfection/ cheese plates/ chocolate fondant!!! My unborn baba has been thoroughly spoilt!!!!! Meal times were definitely special!
PTB: Your prize included 2 nights at the gorgeous Coco de Mer – have you been there yet?
KT: We will be checking into Coco de mer for our 2 night stay in January ;)
