Welcome to Changu Island
Off the coast of Zanzibar, Changu Island lies in the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean, just 5.6 km northwest of Stone Town. This small island, also known as Prison Island, has a history dating back to the 1860s when it was purchased to be a prison for rebellious slaves, though it was later used as a quarantine station. The landscape is defined by lush vegetation, sandy shores, and coral reefs that encircle the island, making it a haven for snorkelling enthusiasts. Visitors can explore the historical ruins of the former prison, now a site of cultural interest. The island is also home to a sanctuary for giant Aldabra tortoises, some of which are over a century old, providing a unique opportunity for close encounters with these ancient creatures. Relaxing on the pristine beaches and learning about the island's complex history are popular activities for those who visit.
