Welcome to Lake Chala
Fed by the underground springs of the mighty Mount Kilimanjaro, Lake Chala is a deep caldera lake surrounded by a steep crater rim with a maximum height of 170 metres and spanning four square kilometres. The lake rests north of Taveta, with one shore in Kenya and the other in Tanzania. Lake Chala is surrounded by breathtakingly beautiful landscapes and is known for its rich blue hue and incredible depth. Visitors may see the fisherman paddling across in their traditional dugout boats and perhaps catch a glimpse of the endangered Lake Chala Tilapia. Other wildlife sightings may include crocodiles, monitor lizards, baboons, vervet monkeys, dik-dik and bushbuck, as well as a variety of birdlife with over 250 species, including peregrine falcons nesting in the crater's cliffs.
