Welcome to Fraserburg

Perched high on the Nuweveld Plateau northwest of the Karoo National Park, Fraserburg is a remote and well-preserved Karoo town in the Northern Cape province. The San or Bushmen were the earliest known inhabitants before the first European settlers arrived circa 1760. Evidence of the latter's influence is etched on the side streets lined with Victorian-style architecture, corbelled houses, the Cape Dutch-style Old Vicarage Museum and the famous hexagonal-shaped Pepper Pot - also known as the Peperbus - the only building of its kind in the country. Nature lovers will be enthused by the challenging De Postjes Trail carved into the Nuweveld Mountain Range 51 kilometres from Fraserburg, ideal for 4x4 drives. As the clarity of the night skies cloaks the town, stargazers can travel about 120km to Sutherland and observe them on a night tour at the South African Astronomical Observatory. Fraserburg forms part of the Flower Route, where from July to September, Namaqualand bursts with a vibrant display of colourful flowers.
