Welcome to Vaal River
A direct tributary of the mighty Orange River, the Vaal travels over 1200 kilometres along the boundary of four South African provinces: Northern Cape, North West, Gauteng and the Free State. Besides providing a critical residential and agricultural water source for the region, it also supplies water to the Vaal Dam, a favourite getaway spot for holidaymakers and watersports enthusiasts from Johannesburg and further afield. The river and its banks offer endless opportunities for recreation including excellent fishing for anglers; fantastic bird watching for twitchers; wakeboarding, water skiing, or motor boating for thrillseekers; and swimming, sunbathing, and canoeing for the more laid-back visitors.
