Hobhouse

South Africa

Welcome to Hobhouse

The tiny farm village of Hobhouse lies on the southernmost tip of the Eastern Free State, close to the Caledon River. The town has played an important role in South African history, as it is the site where the famous activist Emily Hobhouse, after which the town is named, campaigned for the welfare of Boer women and children during the Anglo Boer War. The town’s position near the border with Lesotho makes it a convenient and picturesque base from which to explore the country. The town is also situated on the famously scenic Maloti Route 26, which stretches between Rouxville and Fouriesburg along the mighty sandstone cliffs of the Maluti Mountains which form the border between the two countries. On the journey, visitors can enjoy Ficksburg’s cherry festival, Fouriesburg’s beautiful stone cottages and a variety of wonderful hiking trails.
