Baviaanskloof

Although derived from the Dutch 'valley of baboons', Baviaanskloof is a magically narrow valley that is associated with its flourishing landscapes, steep mountain passes and free-flowing streams. Spanning just under 200 kilometres, Baviaanskloof is sandwiched between two mountain ranges; the Baviaanskloof Mountains on the north and the Kouga mountains on the south side. Designated a World Heritage Site, owing to its rugged, unspoilt natural beauty and diverse vegetation, this vast natural landscape is known famously for its numerous scenic 4x4 routes, breathtaking hiking trails and cultural attractions, such as its pristine examples of San Rock art. Belonging to the phenomenal Cape Floral Kingdom and famous worldwide for its astounding biodiversity, the reserve is home to over 1000 plant species and a profusion of wildlife, including Cape buffalo, Cape mountain zebra, baboon and an array of antelope species.
