Located in the Eastern Cape twelve kilometres inland from Port Alfred and 40 kilometres from Grahamstown, Bathurst is renowned for its heritage architecture and eccentric attractions. The town is home to the oldest unaltered Anglican church building in South Africa, St. John's church, as well as the oldest licenced pub in the country, the Pig and Whistle (at the Pig and Whistle Hotel), where visitors can marvel at the wealth of memorabilia on the walls or simply enjoy a beer. Eccentric landmarks include the Bathhurst Pineapple, the largest constructed pineapple in the world, which stands at 16.5 metres high and contains three stories with pineapple-related products and information about the local industry.
