Welcome to Saint Joseph Island

Saint Joseph Island lies in the Outer Islands of the Seychelles, about 250 kilometres southwest of Mahé, forming part of the Saint Joseph Atoll. The atoll’s shallow lagoon is encircled by sandbanks and coral reefs, with the main island covered in coconut palms and coastal vegetation. Once a site for copra production under French colonial management, remnants of buildings remain scattered along its shores. Today, it is largely uninhabited, with seasonal visits by conservation teams monitoring birdlife and marine species. Its protected waters are home to sea turtles, rays, and various reef fish, attracting researchers and eco-tour groups. Calmer seas enable small boat access and guided expeditions between October and April. Birdwatchers record migratory waders and seabirds, while tidal flats provide opportunities for catch-and-release fly-fishing under regulated conditions.
