Situated between the Mat and Saint-Jean Rivers, Saint-Andre is a commune which includes a village of the same name. The commune is home to various vanilla and sugar cane plantations, and features a rich and diverse cultural heritage, traditional Creole huts, historic monuments and some spectacular natural scenery. With its origins in the Middle Ages Benedictine monastery, the village of Saint-Andre features a wealth of well-preserved historical architecture. Heritage buildings include the the Temple of Tamoul, the Mosque of Saint-Andre, the Chapel of Sainte-Jeanne d'Arc, and the beautiful, marble-decorated Romanesque Abbey. Don’t miss the huge variety of regular markets; the serene Etang de Bois Rouge, a popular lake in Saint-Andre; and the famous glassmakers, who invite you to watch them work with no entry fee.
