Gishwati Mukura National Park

In the hills of western Rwanda, Gishwati-Mukura National Park protects one of the country's last remaining stretches of montane rainforest along the Congo-Nile Divide. Established in 2015 by combining the former Gishwati and Mukura forest reserves, the park provides a refuge for eastern chimpanzees, golden monkeys, L'Hoest's monkeys and blue monkeys, as well as more than 230 bird species, including Albertine Rift endemics such as the Ruwenzori turaco and Grauer's rush warbler. Guided treks lead visitors beneath the forest canopy to observe primates and birdlife, with trails winding through bamboo stands and indigenous hardwoods. Beyond the forest, nearby communities offer opportunities to experience traditional beekeeping, browse locally made crafts, enjoy cultural performances and visit tea plantations overlooking the surrounding hills.
