Welcome to Lake Muhazi
Located in the east of Rwanda, Lake Muhazi is a long, shallow and thin stretch of water winds through 40 kilometres until it reaches the exit of the magnificent Akagera National Park. Even though the lake area is located less than an hour’s drive east of Kigali, it tends to be quiet and offers beautiful shores with a scattering of restaurants and cafes, as well as a few bars which often have live music. Visitors can enjoy seeing a diversity of bird species, including African Fish Eagles, Malachite Kingfishers, Speckled Mousebirds, Village Weavers, and Swamp Flycatchers. An array of fish species also live in the waters here, and there are some excellent boat tours on offer. The main towns close to the lake, Gahani, and Rwesero, provide plenty of shops and services. History enthusiasts should visit the Gahini Anglican Cathedral.
