Welcome to Oranjemund
At the mouth of the Orange River, Oranjemund - German for: "Mouth of Oranje" - lies in Namibia’s far southwest, close to the South African border, within Tsau ǁKhaeb National Park. The town stretches between desert plains and a green river corridor, where reclaimed vegetation softens the arid surroundings and creates an unexpectedly leafy streetscape. Originally established in 1936 to support diamond mining, it was long closed to outsiders and retains a planned, orderly feel shaped by its industrial past. Wildlife moves easily through town, with oryx, ostrich, jackal, and birds crossing parks and roads. Along the river mouth, a protected RAMSAR wetland draws anglers and birders, while calmer coastal winds suit outdoor exploration. An 18-hole golf course follows the riverbank, joined by walking routes, river fishing, and quiet observation of desert-meets-water landscapes.
