Welcome to Turkana Basin
Dubbed the Cradle of Humanity, the Turkana Basin in northern Kenya and southern Ethiopia is known for its remarkable archaeological significance. While today the area features predominantly arid scrubland and desert, the centre of the basin boasts the spectacular Lake Turkana which provides a haven for an astonishing abundance of exotic wildlife as well as a lifeline to the local community of Turkana, Daasanach, Nyangatom and Pokot peoples. While there are no hotels in the area, renowned Paleontologist Louise Leakey recently made her research institute, the Turkana Basin Institute, accessible to tourists. Visitors can look forward to staying in one of the institute's two field centres and having one of the world’s foremost palaeontologists guide them exclusively around the world’s finest repository of fossils.
