Ilha do Fogo

Mozambique

Welcome to Ilha do Fogo

A remote, kilometre-wide islet off the coast of northern Mozambique, Ilha do Fogo island is formed on a rock pinnacle left by Africa's "Great Rift". A pearly white beach surrounds the lush, vegetated island, a nesting site for endangered green and critically endangered hawksbill turtles. Hidden beneath the waves are 450 species of coral and an abundance of marine life. Pristine diving reefs are teeming with fauna, perfect for diving and snorkelling. Northern Mozambique is thought to be a migratory corridor for endangered whale sharks and apex predators, including bull and hammerhead sharks.

Eco-Tourism
As all the Fire Island Conservation Projects are self-funded at this point, we use a portion of the profits generated from our private lodges to assist with the conservation projects, and tourism will always play a key role in the sustainability of these projects. Apart from creating a presence of outsiders in the more remote areas that will assist with the prevention of illegal and unsustainable harvesting, it is also a great way for tourists to experience these areas for themselves and to better understand the need for conservation. Eco-tourism also creates more employment opportunities for the local population.
