About Bugungu Game Reserve
Between the western rift valley escarpment and the eastern shores of Lake Albert, this wildlife sanctuary spreads across 473 square kilometres in north-western Uganda. Rolling grasslands stretch towards riverine forests, where fig trees and mahoganies thrive along the meandering Victoria Nile. Once part of the larger Murchison Falls Conservation Area, it was designated a game reserve to protect vital habitats for elephants, buffalo, and Uganda kobs. Basic camping facilities and guided safaris allow visitors to explore its terrain, while birdwatchers search for the rare shoebill stork along swampy inlets. Game drives weave through acacia-dotted plains where warthogs graze, and hyenas skulk at dusk. Boat trips along the Nile pass pods of hippos and basking crocodiles, while hiking trails climb the escarpment for panoramic views of the Albertine Rift.
