Kasubi Royal Tombs

Established in the early 19th century, the Kasubi Royal Tombs on Kasubi Hill in Kampala, Uganda, serve as a sacred burial ground for four Buganda kings—Muteesa I, Basamula Mwanga II, Daudi Chwa II, and Frederick Walugembe Muteesa II. Home to the iconic Muzibu Azaala Mpanga, a circular thatched structure crafted from traditional materials such as reed, grass, and wood, the site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with artefacts, royal regalia, and historical relics, all deeply rooted in the rich cultural heritage of the Buganda kingdom. Kasubi Tombs is also an active religious site where important centuries-old Ganda rituals are regularly carried out by the Kabaka and others within Buganda’s complex cultural hierarchy. Visitors can embark on guided tours that reveal the spiritual significance of the architecture and its connection to the kingdom’s history. Surrounded by lush, expansive gardens, the site also hosts cultural performances.
