About Kabaka's Palace

Set on Mengo Hill in Kampala, Uganda, Kabaka’s Palace is the former residence of the King of Buganda, Kabaka Mutesa II. If the walls of the palace could talk, it would tell the tale of how Prime Minister Milton Obote instigated a coup in 1966 to remove King Mutesa II from power. The palace was converted into army barracks after the coup and an underground torture chamber and prison were built during Idi Amin’s reign of terror in the 1970s. Visitors can explore the grounds and embark on a guided tour of the eerie underground tunnels.
