Dingaan's Royal Kraal

Zululand, South Africa

About Dingaan's Royal Kraal

Dingaan's Royal Kraal, Mgungundlovu, is a historically significant site in South Africa, once the royal residence of the Zulu king, Dingaan. Located near present-day Eshowe, it served as the political and cultural centre of the Zulu Kingdom in the 19th century. The kraal featured a vast collection of beehive-shaped huts, ceremonial grounds, and defensive walls. It gained infamy due to the massacre of Voortrekker leader Piet Retief and his men in 1838, an event that intensified the Anglo-Zulu Wars. Today, visitors can explore the ruins and gain insight into Zulu history and culture.
